Funerals continue this week for many of the victims. A total of 26 people were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. The gunman also killed his mother in her home before committing suicide.

Many churches across the country are organizing memorial services to honor the murdered victims.

On Thursday, December 20, a special interfaith service will take place in Greensboro at Temple Emanuel. Rabbi Fred Guttman says the event will bring together people of all faiths.

“We have a lot of different things. We have a Christian teaching, a Muslim teaching and a Jewish teaching.  We also have a musical tribute to the children that will be accompanied by a Power Point and we have another song that will be a tribute to the six faculty members of Sandy Hook Elementary School,” says Rabbi Guttman.

“We have encouraged people to bring kids ten years old and up and will encourage them to light the 26 memorial candles,” added Guttman.          

All participants will receive green and white ribbons, the school colors of Sandy Hook Elementary.

“This tragedy has wounded the psyche and the soul of the American people of all faiths, creeds and religions. We need to mourn, but we also need to talk about what the next step is going to be to try to improve mental health and reduce violence in our country,” says Guttman.

The memorial service is open to the public and begins at 7:00 p.m. on Dec. 20 at Temple Emanuel on Jefferson Road in Greensboro.
