Hospital Offers Free Prostate Cancer ScreeningsSeptember 16, 2009 | David FordWake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is sponsoring free screenings for prostate cancer.
The hospital recommends screening for men over age 50 who haven't had a prostate exam in the last year and men over 40 who are black or have a family history of prostate cancer.
The screenings will be conducted by physicians from WFUBMC's Department of Urology.
The September 17th (Thursday) screenings, from 6am-8pm, are by appointment only (336-716-2255).
The September 19th (Saturday) screenings, from 7-10 am, will be conducted on a walk-in basis.
All are at Downtown Health Plaza, 1200 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Winston-Salem.
According to the American Urological Association, prostate cancer affects about 234,000 American men each year, with approxmiately 27,000 deaths per year. "With early detection, 9 out of 10 men can beat prostate cancer", said Karim Kader, M.D., a WFUBMC urologist who is directing the screenings.
