Homeless Veterans in Forsyth County Get New Housing OptionApril 4, 2012 | A new facility is primed to help Forsyth County's homeless veterans. Tuesday afternoon in Winston-Salem, Veterans Helping Veterans Heal opened. It's a new 30-bed, dormitory-style housing unit at 3614 North Glenn Avenue in Winston-Salem. Residents will be able to live in the house for at least 2 years; there, they can get treatment for drug or alcohol addiction and other mental health challenges including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). According to the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness, 558 homeless people lived in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County in late January. 1 out of 5 is a veteran. In the next month or two, the Veterans Administration will send out a team to inspect the facility and approve it for occupation. The location was formerly a VFW Post. About $1.5 million dollars in federal and local grants was used renovate it.
