The Mews is a hotel and conference center on the 55-acre Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem. Its neutral brown and rustic orange color scheme and artwork now matches the architecture and style of the French courtyard and Manor House on the grounds. "Mews" is the French word for stables.
Tina Fullard, Director of Marketing at Graylyn Conference Center, said the upgrades include new suites, guest rooms, a fitness facility and an all-inclusive business center.
"Graylyn is a conference center first," said Fullard. "The great thing about this is that it is distraction-free: [guests] never have to leave this space." The Mews includes a meeting space with connected dining, break-out and sleeping rooms, and can accomodate 120 attendees.
Graylyn is owned and managed by Wake Forest University. The Gray family donated their estate to the university in the 1970’s. In 1984, the university turned the property into a conference center.
The cost for the renovations hasn’t been disclosed. As a non-profit organization, most of the proceeds that Graylyn accrues goes back to the university to help fund student scholarships.
Greensboro-based Moser Mayer Phoenix Associates, along with Atlanta-based Sims Patrick Studios, designed the project.
Fullard said the companies worked closely with the school to help make the upgrades eco-friendly.
“Everything that was in these guest rooms before was donated to local charities - and then the other new materials and furnishings were purchased in Winston-Salem. All of the mattresses are Serta Green, so they really did a great job of following sustainability practices whenever they could,” said Fullard.
A new gift shop at the Mews features products from the Piedmont Triad.
