High Point Market Furniture Trade Show underway

October 24, 2011 | Keri Brown

The week-long event lets vendors showcase their upcoming furniture lines to thousands of buyers and designers.

The High Point Market Furniture Trade Show is also creating an economic boom in the Triad, bringing with it hundreds of jobs. Some of the jobs created from support industries outside of furniture include, photographers, craftsman, sales people and ancillary positions in the airline industry.

Tom Conley, President and CEO of the High Point Market Authority said the number of companies and individuals involved in this year’s trade show is up from previous years.

"The last time we commissioned a study, the economic impact was over $1.1 billion a year just for comparison sake because that is a huge number that people have a hard time wrapping their heads around. That exceeds the economic impact from three Super Bowls, so we know it puts a lot of people to work in the greater Triad area,” said Conley.

Over the past few years, many people in the state have worried that Las Vegas-based International Market Centers (IMC) was going to steal the furniture market capital from High Point. IMC bought major showroom buildings in the city several months ago to add to their portfolio of two major furniture showrooms in Las Vegas.

But IMC recently announced it supports the High Point Market Trade Show, and plans to continue the event without any changes.

This year’s show runs through Thursday.
