A hidden driver is someone who drives a vehicle regularly, but isn’t listed on the vehicle owner’s insurance policy. AAA Carolinas says it’s seeing an increase in undisclosed drivers who get involved in an accident.
“Over the past five years, we have seen an increase. The number of claims involving hidden drivers has doubled and we attribute that due to the recession because people are trying to save money and you have people are moving back home or moving back in with other family members who allow them to use the car regularly, but that person should be included on their insurance policy,” said Angela Daley, Public Relations Manager for AAA Carolinas.
Triple AAA recommends all licensed drivers in your household, friends or anyone else who use your vehicle should be included on the insurance policy. Daley says a lot of people are simply unaware that they should list them because they don't consider them a regular driver.
Daley says if an accident occurs, there could be some major consequences.
“If someone should be included on your insurance policy and isn’t and is involved in an accident, that claim may not be covered and be denied. In fact, there is a great chance that it will be denied. The insurance company could also say that the policy holder committed fraud and the penalties could be very severe. It could result in fines, or even jail time,” says Daley.
AAA Carolinas says the cost of adding someone to your vehicle’s insurance policy varies, depending on the drivers their age, driving record and other information.
