Gulf Oil Spill Heading to N.C.June 18, 2010 | LeShea AgnewIt's day 60 of the worst oil spill in U.S. history. As crews continue working to stop and manage the spill in the Gulf of Mexico, local scientists are preparing for oil to make its way to the North Carolina coast. Oceanographer J.P. Walsh is a professor of geological sciences at East Carolina University. He has studied marine life and collected water data from our state's coastal ways as well asl New Guinea and the Gulf. WFDD's LeShea Agnew spoke with Walsh earlier this week. He began by explaining that if currents hold steady, it could push oil from the Gulf to the eastern seaboard in a matter of weeks. Walsh says East Carolina University is working to secure grants to help pay for him and his colleagues to travel to the Gulf for more accurate data collection. Coastal research on the Gulf costs between $10,000 and $50,00 dollars a day.
