Governor Beverly Perdue Will Not Seek Re-election

January 26, 2012 |

North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue will not seek re-election. She faced a potential rematch against former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, a Republican whom she narrowly defeated in 2008 in the state's closest gubernatorial contest since 1972.

Perdue's win was partly attributed to Barack Obama's surprise win in North Carolina. Perdue has struggled with a state economy hit hard by the recession and an unemployment rate persistently above the national average.

Lt. Governor Walton Dalton says he will run for the office.

WFDD's David Ford spoke with John Dinan, a Political Science Professor at Wake Forest University, about the impact of Perdue's decision on the upcoming gubernatorial race. To hear to the interview, click the Listen icon above this story.
