Former UNCSA Chancellor Gets National Opera Award

Thursday night in Washington, D.C.,
94-year-old Robert Ward received the National Endowment for the Arts Opera Honors. Ward has composed 7 operas, including The Crucible, which won the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for music. This award recognizes artists for their lifetime achievements and contributions to American opera. UNCSA Chancellor John Mauceri presented a sculptured piece to Ward during the ceremony. It was held at the Sidney Harman Center for the Performing Arts. Ward was the top administrator of UNCSA from 1967 until 1974, beginning as the president and then becoming the first chancellor. Three other opera masters were honored, stage designer John Conklin, general director of the Seattle Opera Speight Jenkins and mezzo-soprano Rise Stevens. This ceremony kicks off National Opera Week which runs until November 6th.
