Former High School Principal Pleads Guilty to Assault in Forsyth County

August 12, 2009 |

Dan Piggott, the former principal of Atkins High School, pleaded guilty yesterday to two counts of assault in connection with allegations that he groped and fondled two female school employees.

As part of the plea deal, the assault charges were consolidated and the charges of sexual battery were dismissed. This means Piggott will not have to register as a sex offender.

Piggott was sentenced to 24 months of supervised probation. He will also have to perform 150 hours of community service, pay a $500 fine and pay a $200 community-service fee.

Charges stem from claims by a former Atkins High School custodian and former administrator at the same school. Both women say Piggott made unwanted sexual advancements, fondled and groped them back in 2007.

The former principal tried to resign from the Winston-Salem Forsyth County school system in 2008 but the school system rejected the resignation and chose instead to fire him after he failed to meet with the school.

Piggott was named the 1999 Wachovia Principal of the Year in North Carolina while he was Carver High School principal. Piggott became principal of Atkins High School in 2005.
