First Lady Michelle Obama Keynote Speaker at NC A&T

May 10, 2012 | Keri Brown

Officials at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro are preparing for a visit from First Lady Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama has been tapped to deliver the address for North Carolina A&T State University’s spring commencement on Saturday, May 12.

The White House says A&T is "part of the rich legacy of historically black colleges and universities that have been instrumental in educating generations of African-Americans.”

This year, NC A&T will graduate more than 1,000 students across nine schools and colleges.  Doors to the ticketed event in Greensboro open at 7:30 a.m.

The Obama administration has held several high-profile events at college campuses in recent months. In October, President Barack Obama visited Guilford Technical Community College and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill made a stop at Davidson County Community College in February.

North Carolina is one of several key states in November’s general election. Obama won the Tar Heel state by an estimated 14,000 votes in 2008. The Democrats are also holding their national convention in Charlotte in September.

Michele Obama will also give commencement speeches on May 11 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and June 17 at Oregon State University.

Last week, Former First Lady Laura Bush was the commencement speaker at High Point University's graduation ceremonies.
