Fewer People Visit Downtown Greensboro

Fewer people are visiting downtown Greensboro. That's according to a survey released this month by the economic group Downtown Greensboro, Inc. In April, about 400 people were surveyed on how often they go downtown either for work or for entertainment.

71% say this year, they've visited downtown at least once. In 2009, 82% percent of people surveyed spent time downtown. The survey indicates people in their mid 20's and 30's were the most common visitors to downtown Greensboro. Respondents say they'd like to see more retail shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and places to park.

And a recent move by Greensboro City Council members are causing some downtown merchants and residents more concern. Last week, the council passed a measure establishing a $2 fee for parking in downtown garages after 9 p.m. The new fee takes effect in January, 2012.
