Controversial Former Archbishop Visits Winston-SalemFebruary 9, 2007 | Thibault WorthThe former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, is in Winston-Salem this weekend. Since his retirement in 2002, Carey has been active in religious reconciliation efforts, as well as work to stop the spread of AIDS in Africa. Under his watch, the Church of England ordained its first woman priest, a controversial move he strongly supported. Carey has been equally controversial in the United States for opposing the ordination of gays.
