“I’m originally from New York and it's 9/11, so I thought it was an appropriate time to drop off and try to do as much as I can,” said Richard Dailey, who donated a bag of canned goods with his family.

 Volunteer Betty Kelly said she’s excited to see Triad residents working together.

 “9/11 was a tragedy for all of us and I just wanted to show my appreciation for what others have done and how people came to the rescue when others needed help. And so I just wanted to give back today and be a part of this,” said Kelly.

 The Volunteer Center of Greensboro coordinated the event. Organizers said the economy and high unemployment are causing shortages at many food pantries in the Triad. Shanna Reece with the Servant Center of Greensboro said with holidays around the corner, the need will be even greater.

 “We are having increased clients coming in needing food... with the economy and people out of work they need additional support so they can stay in their homes and feed their children. North Carolina is ranked first with Louisiana on childhood hunger,” said Reece.

 Greensboro is one of eight leadership cities nationwide selected to host public service events in remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Several media organizations from the Triad also participated in the event.

 Kathi Lester with the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce said the community response is overwhelming.

 “The willingness to work together and have competitors work together for our community was amazing, and this entire weekend should show Greensboro and the Triad what we can do when we work together,” said Lester.
