Bus Fire in Winston-Salem

May 31, 2011 | David Ford

Tuesday aftenoon in Forsyth County, a school bus fire was reported on Silas Creek Parkway at Robinhood Road. It's the third school bus incident in the Triad in as many weeks after two recent bus accidents in the Davidson County area. None of the accidents are related.

At approximately 3:45pm on Tuesday, a 14-passenger Summit School bus was en route back to the bus yard following student drop-offs. There were no students on board when the bus driver heard a sudden, loud, pop sound. According to the driver, the bus immediately caught fire. Summit School Director of Finance and Operations, Carter Sturkie, says the bus driver then grabbed a fire extinguisher, jumped off the bus without sustaining any injuries, and began battling the blaze. A fire truck arrived on the scene shortly afterward and aided in putting out the fire.

After backing up traffic beyond the Yorkshire exit for nearly 30 minutes, the vehicle was removed and traffic returned to normal.
