Author and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year to Visit Summit School

March 23, 2012 | Keri Brown

A superstar in the outdoor world will be visiting Winston-Salem on Saturday, March 24. Andrew Skurka, author and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, will share his outdoor adventures with the public at Summit School on Reynolda Road.

Jeff Turner, director of auxillary programs at the school, said Skura will give two presentations, including a question and answer session.

"The main event will be at 7 p.m., and that will be a presentation that Andrew does around the country describing his adventures in Alaska. He will present slides, tell stories and share some videos. But the first event is at 4:30 p.m., and is more like a clinic for people who are interested in hiking. He will set up his gear and explain how he does ultra-light backpacking," said Tuner.

Skurka will also sign autographs for his new book, The Ultimate Hiker's Gear Guide: Tools and Techniques to Hit the Trail.

Both events are free and open to the public. They will be held in the Loma Hopkins Theatre at Summit School this Saturday. The event is sponsored by Summit's Outdoor Adventure and Recreation Program and by the Great Outdoor Provision Company.
