Asheville High School Band Will Perform in 2013 Inaugural Parade

January 21, 2013 |

Sunday afternoon, U.S. Senator Kay Hagan welcomed the Asheville High School band to Washington, DC. Today (Monday) they will perform in the 57th Inaugural Parade down Pennsylvania Avenue after the public swearing in of President Barack Obama. This group of 105 students was chosen from 2,800 marching bands, drill teams and dance groups from across the country. The senator answered a few questions from the students and talked about how she is committed to making sure the federal government provides more educational funding. But at the same time, she said students have to do their part by studying hard, being respectful to their teachers and parents and always striving to excel academically. They met in a meeting room in the Dirksen Senate Office Building where Senator Hagan's office is located. This picture was taken by Bianca Schmidt, one of the parents with the band.
Saturday, the band performed in the Inaugural Band Festival in Bethesda, Maryland. Under the leadership of Director Will Talley, they played several selections. This group was one of seven high school bands that participated. Their experiences are being documented by and independent video group and the Asheville Citizen Times.
