A Reporter Surveys the Scene

March 31, 2011 | Jeff Tiberii

On Wednesday evening a small plane crashed into a house in High Point. According to law enforcement officials, two people - the pilot and a passenger - died at the scene.

The plane that crashed was a Hawker Beechcraft. In addition to the home that was severely damaged, another house had significant exterior damage. The field of debris was spread across several hundred yards.

The flight, which originated in Wilmington, was scheduled to land at Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem. However, poor weather conditions - including rain, fog and limited visibility - caused the travelers to divert their trip and attempt to land at Piedmont Triad International Airport, in Greensboro.

The site of the wreck is about two miles, as the crow flies, from the landing strip at PTI.
