14-year old dies, taking murder spree toll to four

November 22, 2011 | Keri Brown

The Guilford County Sheriff's Office says 14 year-old Zachary Lee Smith died late Monday after being shot by his mother, 36 year-old Mary Ann Holder.
Authorities said they are still trying to understand what drove Holder to shoot her ex-lover, who is married, and five children before she killed herself.
The shootings began around 9 a.m. on Sunday and took place in three different locations: A parking lot at the Piedmont Tiad Airport, Holder's home in Plesasant Garden and in Holder's vehicle.
Two other children, including the girlfiend of one of Holder's son's and Holder's nephew remain in critical condition.
Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes said the tragedy is taking a toll on the entire community.
"We have a situation where so many people have been victimized by this not only the people who are the victims but the community, the schools, the families and you have the law enforcement officers who basically have been impacted by this to because they have family," said Barnes.
Police say an affair had ended with Holder's former lover, 40-year-old Randall Lamb. Lamb is expected to survive a shoulder wound. Whether anger over the end of her romantic relationship led Holder to kill remains unclear.
Barnes says Holder left two notes taking responsibility for the shootings, apologizing for the hurt she's caused.
