The Piedmont Chamber Singers are celebrating their 35th birthday with a couple of Western Classical music’s big B’s: Bach and Britten. The concert is titled A Garland of Hope: Cantatas of Compassion, and it features Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata No. 21 I Had Much Affliction, and Benjamin Britten’s Cantata Compassion Op. 69. The PCS performances under the direction of co-founder and former artistic director Donald Armitage will be Saturday, April 14, at 7:30pm in Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, and Sunday, April 15, at 3:00pm in Dana Auditorium in Greensboro. PCS artistic director Wendy Looker spoke with TAW host David Ford by phone from her studio in Greensboro.

North Carolina Writers’ Network Spring Conference 2012 is Saturday, April 28, at the University of North Carolina Greensboro’s Elliot University Center. Registration for the full day of workshops, panel discussions, and more by acclaimed writers from across the state begins at 8am and the cost for Network members is $99. This year marks the NCWN's 27th anniversary, and leading the organization for the past four years has been award-winning author and Executive Director Ed Southern. Last month he stopped by WFDD to talk about this year’s offerings with TAW host David Ford.
