Real People, Real Stories

Small Waves of the Future

May 9, 2011

This month marks 50 years since the first Freedom Ride began.

Northern Civil Rights activists rode interstate buses into the segregated South to test the United States Supreme Court decision in the case Boynton v. Virginia. The justices outlawed racial segregation in the restaurants and waiting rooms in terminals serving buses that crossed state lines. Meanwhile, in many parts of the South, individuals were also chipping away at segregation. And in this segment of Real People, Real Stories, guest commentator Terri Kirby Erickson describes how two little girls took their neighborhood by surprise.

Terri Kirby Erickson is the award-winning author of three collections of poetry, including her latest book, In the Palms of Angels (Press 53). She draws inspiration for her poems from various life experiences while growing up in Winston-Salem and also from her extensive travels. She lives in Lewisville, N.C. with her husband.
