It is a project of the ECHO network and is made possible by the generosity of Salemtowne, a continuing care retirement community, where every life shines and stories are celebrated.
Alex Velez is originally from Miami, Florida. He says he was raised in one of the toughest neighborhoods. At age eleven, he began selling drugs and committing robberies. At age 15, he was convicted of second degree murder and spent nine years in prison. Now Velez lives in the Piedmont Triad and is engaged to Dia Dawkins of Lexington. He describes to her the one incident that was a turning point in his life and motivated him to become a new person.
