Her Great Sacrifice

October 8, 2012

In 2010, 107 North Carolinians were murdered as a result of domestic violence. According to State Attorney General Roy Cooper, this was an increase from the previous year. 70 of the victims were female and 37 were male. The murders were committed by 96 male offenders and 11 female offenders. Guest commentator 38-year-old Jeffery Pyles describes the devastating reach of this painful reality. He says he watched Warren Marshall, his mother’s boyfriend of 16 years, shoot his mother during a Surry County domestic dispute in 2008. Marshall is now serving a 26-year prison sentence after being convicted of 2nd degree murder regarding Pruitt and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill regarding Pyles.

Pyles is married with two daughters and lives in Yadkin County. He’s also very active with Family Services in Winston-Salem and the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. It’s Saturday, October 13 at BB&T Ball Park in downtown Winston-Salem. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:00 a.m.
