Real People, Real Stories Changing SidesSeptember 17, 2012Throughout this academic year, WFDD will air a special segment during Real People, Real Stories. It’s called Faces of Courage.
50 years ago, Wake Forest University integrated its student body. Now it’s commemorating this historic decision with Faces of Courage, honoring those who have and continue to enrich Wake Forest’s diverse and inclusive community. In 1962, David Matthews graduated from Wake Forest. He says his college experiences broke the generational cycle of prejudice in which he grew up.
Matthews is retired from his work as a traveling salesman in the China Gift Industry. He and his wife live in Winston-Salem. They have two children: a daughter who teaches at Forsyth Technical Community College and a son who is a homicide detective with the Greensboro Police Department. Matthews is an active volunteer with Winston-Salem’s Habitat for Humanity, The Stepping Stones Ministry and the Winston-Salem Center for Education in the Arts.
